Honduras backpacking itinerary, It would not be nice to talk about all of Central America on TheSoloBackpacker and skip Honduras, especially after making the effort to reach Honduras and spend around 15 hour in the country. Regardless of the negative information available online regarding the safety of Honduras and El Salvador, which is true to some extend. I wanted to give it a shut myself. However my plan did not go very well.

Although I don’t have enough information to write a full itinerary about Honduras currently, But I wanted to share my experience with you guys to build your confident, and tell you that, even if we get faced with challenges on the road its ok its just part of the life experience . It will also give us more experience in life and build our confident in travelling independently and show us the world from different angle.

One thing you need to know about Honduras, that the bus system are very basic and most of the time you will find your self in a mini bus. This is normal. It in nothing like Mexico, Costa rica or Panama. But they are very reliable and safe in my experience. Also the bus they only leave in the morning, but they can arrive at night depend on the roads, so you have to forget about night bus, which I really enjoy, because it save you time and money.

One top tip for safety in Honduras, always book with a reliable company, leave early morning and avoid night bus.

So after spending few days of enjoying an amazing sae wave at El Tunco in El Salvador, I decided to to explore part of Honduras. I booked myself a shutter bus that cross from El Tinco to León in Nicaragua, which is a regular bus service that goes on daily bases. You can stop at different area along the way if you like, depending on your rout.

My Initial plan was to stop at an area where I can go to La Ceiba and explore Roatán Bay Islands and Utila, Bay Islands in Honduras for a kick of water activity and diving.

However the situation in Honduras was not stable at the time when I was trying to book my shutter bus, so I though I cross to Honduras and decide from there. Few hour after we entered the Honduras border, we where informed that election protesters has clash and the government has advice all traveller to evacuate the country. Further more, after driving a bit further the protesters has blocked the route to León and set fire on the main roads. They did not cased us any trouble when the found out we are tourist and some of the local has help us to find an alternative rout through the jungle, and I do mean jungle, as we had to drive on tree branch and had to cross small revers. After sometime we manage to go back on the main road, from their everyone in the shuttle bus was heading toward León in Nicaragua.

And that was my short experience Honduras, unfortunately I did not mange to take many photo for the country as the situation was a bit serious, but I mange to get few shout for the road blocks.

Top things to do in Honduras
